The Canada First Research Excellence Fund at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Global Research Initiative (GRI) in Sustainable Low Carbon Unconventional Resources

Job Description:

Several Postdoctoral positions are available for projects to investigate the use of novel additives in Oil Sands Recovery Processes. The position is available immediately and the search will continue until the team is assembled.

In 2016, the University of Calgary was awarded $75 million over seven years from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for its initiative entitled Global Research Initiative (GRI) in Sustainable Low carbon Unconventional Resources. The goal of this research is to dramatically reduce the impact of energy extraction and production on the environment.

As part of the implementation of its GRI scientific strategy and to improve hydrocarbon recovery, while reducing emissions and energy intensity, we are seeking applications from qualified and motivated scientists with a passion for clean energy and interdisciplinary research.

You will work in the area of manipulation of interfaces to increase overall mass transport for oil recovery applications. Visualization of the interface and manipulation of the interface using external fields such as electric fields or temperature gradients is part of the work. In addition, you will work on the development of a model for transport enhancement strategies based on the experimental results obtained. The applications are in subsurface flows and the understanding of the underlying physics in enhanced hydrocarbon recovery techniques. You are expected to:

1. Design and conduct experiments to generate images of fluid-fluid-solid interfaces and controlling these interfaces by external stimuli. 
2. Analyze the images using open-source and commercial packages such as MATLAB Image J. 
3. Conduct fluid dynamic modeling of the observed phenomena.
4. Participate in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students working on various aspects of this research theme.
5. Write research proposals.


We welcome applications from candidates with a background in engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum) or related disciplines with a strong interest in laboratory work, experimental and computational fluid dynamics, hands on assembly of pieces to build a set up. A good understanding of chemistry is required. Previous experience in Experimental Fluid Mechanics, Image Analysis and  Computational Fluid Dynamics is highly desirable. Relevant background in experimental, theoretical, and numerical simulation of multiphase flow in porous media is an asset. 

You will be required to work within a team environment which requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of interdisciplinary researchers.

To be eligible as a Postdoctoral scholar at the University of Calgary, you must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent within the five (5) years immediately preceding the appointment. Please review the Postdoc Eligibility Guidelines for more information prior to applying for this position.
